A fair review of Shopify’s own app starts with the current listing. Its capabilities have changed, so categorical claims copied from older articles can mislead a buyer.
What the current listing documents
Shopify Digital Products describes digital files and links, delivery associated with products and variants, download limits and customer-account access. It is free. These are meaningful capabilities for a straightforward digital store.
What needs more investigation
The listing does not document the same dedicated PDF-stamping, licence-inventory and custom/scheduled workflows that BIG describes. An undocumented capability is not proof that no configuration or integration can provide it; check your exact requirement.
Avoid unsupported performance claims
A comparison should not invent complaint rates, outage histories or revenue losses. Test a representative file and inspect your own customer experience. If you have a failure, record what happened rather than assuming every merchant sees the same result.
Choose the smallest workable setup
Start with the free app if it meets your needs. Consider BIG when specialised delivery or operational tools solve a real gap. Keep an evidence-based list of those gaps so the choice can be revisited as both products evolve.
Your practical action plan
- Write your acceptance checklist. List every required file type, delivery mode, protection option and integration. Separate must-have capabilities from attractive extras.
- Test your own workload. Use the same product and customer journey across the shortlisted apps. Include your largest realistic file, a mobile download and an existing-order scenario if migrating.
- Price a normal and peak month. Use stored GB, transferred GB, order count and any provider-specific sales caps. Confirm the current billing screen and migration terms before committing.
Before you publish
- The product page matches the actual files, access and timing.
- A sample or preview reflects the product customers receive.
- The purchase, email and mobile access route have been tested.
- Compatibility, licence terms and support contact are easy to find.
- Capacity and costs have been checked against the current plan.
