A free plan is useful when its limits match your launch. Compare products, orders, storage and required features separately; a free installation is not always a free ongoing service.
Choose the limit you will hit first
A 200 MB ebook catalogue and a 3 GB video product have very different needs. Write down catalogue storage, expected orders and the transfer volume of a promotion before installing. Leave room for updated files and repeat downloads.
What BIG’s free plan includes
BIG’s current listing shows 250 MB storage, 50 orders, unlimited products and unlimited licence keys. PDF stamping belongs to paid plans. Do not use older articles that quote 500 MB, three products or 15 orders as today’s BIG limits.
When another free option fits
Shopify Digital Products is free and supports files and links. Fileflare advertises a free 1 GB allowance with unlimited bandwidth. LDT’s free plan lists 500 MB and 30 orders per month. Each has different workflows; free capacity alone is not a complete feature comparison.
Set an upgrade trigger before launch
Decide what should cause an upgrade: a storage threshold, a planned promotion, PDF protection or an integration. For a paid-plan comparison with current sources, use our app guide rather than assuming a free tier will handle every future launch.
Your practical action plan
- Write your acceptance checklist. List every required file type, delivery mode, protection option and integration. Separate must-have capabilities from attractive extras.
- Test your own workload. Use the same product and customer journey across the shortlisted apps. Include your largest realistic file, a mobile download and an existing-order scenario if migrating.
- Price a normal and peak month. Use stored GB, transferred GB, order count and any provider-specific sales caps. Confirm the current billing screen and migration terms before committing.
Before you publish
- The product page matches the actual files, access and timing.
- A sample or preview reflects the product customers receive.
- The purchase, email and mobile access route have been tested.
- Compatibility, licence terms and support contact are easy to find.
- Capacity and costs have been checked against the current plan.
