Shopify’s free app and BIG overlap on digital file delivery. The decision is whether specialised workflows justify a paid plan for your particular store.
Use a current baseline
The official Shopify app now describes file and link delivery, variants, download limits and customer-account access. Do not rely on a comparison that assumes the older product has never changed.
Test the BIG-specific requirements
Try the actual workflow you need: an automatically stamped PDF, a unique licence key, a custom commission or a scheduled release. Include imports and exports if this is a migration rather than a new store.
Model the paid tier honestly
BIG’s paid plans start at $9.99, but APIs and webhooks require Growth or Enterprise. Storage and monthly bandwidth remain limited by plan even when order counts are unlimited. The free Shopify app may be the better budget fit for basic delivery.
Decide after a controlled purchase
Compare the email, mobile download and post-purchase access using the same product. Record any manual work required. Move only when the resulting benefit is clear enough to justify the new cost and migration effort.
Your practical action plan
- Write your acceptance checklist. List every required file type, delivery mode, protection option and integration. Separate must-have capabilities from attractive extras.
- Test your own workload. Use the same product and customer journey across the shortlisted apps. Include your largest realistic file, a mobile download and an existing-order scenario if migrating.
- Price a normal and peak month. Use stored GB, transferred GB, order count and any provider-specific sales caps. Confirm the current billing screen and migration terms before committing.
Before you publish
- The product page matches the actual files, access and timing.
- A sample or preview reflects the product customers receive.
- The purchase, email and mobile access route have been tested.
- Compatibility, licence terms and support contact are easy to find.
- Capacity and costs have been checked against the current plan.
