Sell Digital Art on Shopify: Files, Prints and Licence Options

In this guideJump to a section +

Selling an artwork as a downloadable file is different from granting commercial use or shipping a physical print. A clear product page distinguishes these offers before the customer buys.

Define the deliverable

List formats, pixel dimensions, aspect ratios and the intended printing sizes. If a physical print is not included, state that near the purchase button. Show preview images that accurately represent the file, not only a decorative room mockup.

Keep licences understandable

Explain personal versus commercial use in your own terms and identify any restrictions. Check rights for fonts, textures, stock assets and commissioned material used in the artwork. Selling a file does not automatically transfer copyright.

Package versions for real use

Offer a logical folder structure and simple instructions for choosing the right aspect ratio. Include a small preview or readme. Test that ZIP files open on common devices and that the final image matches the advertised resolution.

Offer custom work with custom delivery

A personalised portrait or bespoke design should use a made-to-order workflow. State the brief, revision allowance and expected delivery timing. Keep finished deliverables associated with the correct customer order.

Your practical action plan

  1. Prepare the deliverable. Keep an original backup and publish a clear version. List the formats, compatibility and licence scope before the customer purchases.
  2. Connect and test in Shopify. Map the file, link or key to the right product and variant. Use the appropriate standard, custom or scheduled delivery mode. Check a controlled purchase on desktop and mobile.
  3. Choose capacity and monitor it. Use catalogue size and expected monthly transfer to choose a plan. Track actual usage and support questions after launch, especially before a promotion.

Before you publish

  • The product page matches the actual files, access and timing.
  • A sample or preview reflects the product customers receive.
  • The purchase, email and mobile access route have been tested.
  • Compatibility, licence terms and support contact are easy to find.
  • Capacity and costs have been checked against the current plan.

Where BIG fits
