Deliver Software Licence Keys Automatically on Shopify

In this guideJump to a section +

A good licence-key workflow sends each buyer the correct key, keeps the inventory consistent and makes activation support manageable. Begin with your licensing model, then connect delivery.

Decide what a key means

Specify product, edition, activation count and duration in your own licensing system. BIG delivers the key; it does not make an arbitrary code valid inside your software. Avoid mixing trial and paid keys in one inventory.

Prepare and map the inventory

Clean duplicates and map keys to the correct Shopify product or variant. Keep a secure backup. Test which key is assigned to a controlled order and verify it activates the intended edition.

Handle depleted stock and retries

Know what the customer sees when no usable key remains. Do not let a marketing promise of instant access outrun your inventory process. Test duplicate or retried order events so support can distinguish delivery from activation issues.

Plan exports and revocation

Keep order-to-key records for support. A refund does not necessarily revoke a key in an external activation system automatically. Confirm and implement the process your licensing service needs; use BIG’s API and webhooks only on a plan that includes them.

Your practical action plan

  1. Prepare the deliverable. Keep an original backup and publish a clear version. List the formats, compatibility and licence scope before the customer purchases.
  2. Connect and test in Shopify. Map the file, link or key to the right product and variant. Use the appropriate standard, custom or scheduled delivery mode. Check a controlled purchase on desktop and mobile.
  3. Choose capacity and monitor it. Use catalogue size and expected monthly transfer to choose a plan. Track actual usage and support questions after launch, especially before a promotion.

Before you publish

  • The product page matches the actual files, access and timing.
  • A sample or preview reflects the product customers receive.
  • The purchase, email and mobile access route have been tested.
  • Compatibility, licence terms and support contact are easy to find.
  • Capacity and costs have been checked against the current plan.

Where BIG fits

BIG connects Shopify products with digital files, links and licence keys. It supports standard, custom and scheduled products. Paid plans include unlimited order counts, with plan-specific storage and bandwidth; API access and outgoing webhooks require Growth or Enterprise.
