Sell Course Files on Shopify Without a Full Course Platform

In this guideJump to a section +

You can sell a downloadable course as a collection of videos, audio and resources. Decide whether that format meets your teaching goals before assuming a file-delivery app can replace a learning platform.

Know which learning features you need

Downloads can suit a workshop or self-paced resource pack. Progress tracking, quizzes, certificates, community access and student dashboards require separate verification. If these are essential, evaluate an LMS or a compatible course integration.

Organise the lessons for self-guided use

Use a numbered contents file, clear lesson names and a suggested sequence. Keep videos in manageable sizes and include supporting PDFs. Explain how to resume learning after closing the download page.

Make accessibility part of the package

Provide captions or transcripts where appropriate and readable exercise files. Test the download on mobile and a slower connection. A small preview lesson helps buyers assess format and teaching style before paying.

Be precise about release timing

A scheduled release can unlock a product at a specified time. That is not automatically the same as a per-student drip schedule. Verify the exact behaviour before promising a lesson every week after each individual purchase.

Your practical action plan

  1. Prepare the deliverable. Keep an original backup and publish a clear version. List the formats, compatibility and licence scope before the customer purchases.
  2. Connect and test in Shopify. Map the file, link or key to the right product and variant. Use the appropriate standard, custom or scheduled delivery mode. Check a controlled purchase on desktop and mobile.
  3. Choose capacity and monitor it. Use catalogue size and expected monthly transfer to choose a plan. Track actual usage and support questions after launch, especially before a promotion.

Before you publish

  • The product page matches the actual files, access and timing.
  • A sample or preview reflects the product customers receive.
  • The purchase, email and mobile access route have been tested.
  • Compatibility, licence terms and support contact are easy to find.
  • Capacity and costs have been checked against the current plan.

Where BIG fits

BIG connects Shopify products with digital files, links and licence keys. It supports standard, custom and scheduled products. Paid plans include unlimited order counts, with plan-specific storage and bandwidth; API access and outgoing webhooks require Growth or Enterprise.
