Choose audio formats for the buyer’s use, not just the smallest file. A listener, a producer and a customer buying stems may need different packages and download instructions.
MP3 for convenient listening
MP3 uses lossy compression and generally makes smaller downloads. It can be useful for listening copies or previews. Describe the encoding quality and do not present it as identical to the original lossless master.
WAV and FLAC for different lossless workflows
WAV commonly carries uncompressed PCM audio; FLAC uses lossless compression. Compatibility depends on the buyer’s software and devices. Test the exact files in the applications you say you support rather than relying only on the extension.
A simple comparison
A listening edition might contain MP3s and artwork. A production edition might include WAV files, stems and a licence document. These are illustrative packaging choices, not a rule that every album needs multiple editions.
Keep filenames and metadata coherent
Use consistent track numbers and names so a ZIP opens in a sensible order. Verify embedded metadata and artwork where supported. Keep the original masters backed up separately from the delivery files you publish.
Your practical action plan
- Prepare the deliverable. Keep an original backup and publish a clear version. List the formats, compatibility and licence scope before the customer purchases.
- Connect and test in Shopify. Map the file, link or key to the right product and variant. Use the appropriate standard, custom or scheduled delivery mode. Check a controlled purchase on desktop and mobile.
- Choose capacity and monitor it. Use catalogue size and expected monthly transfer to choose a plan. Track actual usage and support questions after launch, especially before a promotion.
Before you publish
- The product page matches the actual files, access and timing.
- A sample or preview reflects the product customers receive.
- The purchase, email and mobile access route have been tested.
- Compatibility, licence terms and support contact are easy to find.
- Capacity and costs have been checked against the current plan.
