Discounts can support a specific campaign, but a lower price does not automatically create a better business. Decide what behaviour you want to encourage and measure the result against a baseline.
Give the code a job
A launch offer, an existing-customer bundle upgrade and an abandoned-checkout campaign serve different purposes. Use clear eligibility, expiry and usage limits. Avoid permanent fake urgency or a discount from a price you never actually charge.
Calculate the contribution per sale
Subtract the discount, payment fees, app charges and campaign costs. For example, a 20% discount on a $25 product produces $20 of sales revenue before fees and costs. That arithmetic is not a forecast of conversion or profit.
Test eligibility and combinations
Use Shopify’s current discount settings and verify the intended products, customer eligibility and combination rules. Test a mixed cart if the store sells physical goods too. Check that the digital-delivery app receives the correct order items.
Review the right measures
Compare revenue after discounts, contribution, refund rate and support load, not just code redemptions. Separate new buyers from people who would have paid full price. End or revise the campaign when the evidence does not support continuing it.
Your practical action plan
- Define the test. Choose one audience, one outcome and a small complete product. Write down what result would justify another version before spending on a larger launch.
- Make the offer reviewable. Show a sample and state what is included, what it requires and when it arrives. If taking preorders, make the delay explicit and test the scheduled delivery settings.
- Review real results. Use purchases, contribution after costs and customer feedback. Revise the offer or stop the experiment if the evidence does not support expanding it.
Before you publish
- The product page matches the actual files, access and timing.
- A sample or preview reflects the product customers receive.
- The purchase, email and mobile access route have been tested.
- Compatibility, licence terms and support contact are easy to find.
- Capacity and costs have been checked against the current plan.
